The Erasmus European Union funded project, Centres of Vocational Excellence in Climate Smart Agriculture in South Africa (CoVE SA), launched three regional CoVEs in March 2023. Regional stakeholders attending the launches identified training needs for agriculture students at a local level.

At the launch at Boland College, stakeholders identified five competencies which would increase the employability of graduates, at a local level. The five competencies included knowledge in greenhouse farming, basic automotive and maintenance, calibration of implements, computer literacy and basic welding. To address these training needs, Boland College hosted two workshops in the first term of 2025, on the topics of basic arc welding techniques and tractor maintenance procedures.

On 12 February 2025, students from the Agriculture Department of Boland College, along with emerging farmers, participated in a training session on fundamental arc welding techniques. Held at Boland College's Engineering Workshop, the event provided attendees with hands-on instruction in basic welding skills, empowering them to become more self-sufficient.

The second workshop, held on 3 March 2025, focused on tractor maintenance procedures. Agricultural students from Boland College, along with emerging farmers, attended the session at the Worcester Campus farming site. During the workshop, participants learned essential maintenance techniques to enhance their self-sufficiency. Trainees were provided with a checklist to guide them as facilitators demonstrated basic maintenance tasks on the tractor.
